The increase in orphans and lack of government funding for handicapped individuals means many children and adults in developing countries are deprived of the care that they are entitled to. However, our community care projects allow you to work in a number of specialist schools and community centres, alongside dedicated locals, to help address so many 'forgotten' needs.
Care Work with Blind Children in Accra, Ghana
In any developing country, dedicated individuals are needed to help run schools and community centres for blind children and adults. Ghana is no exception. Furthermore, a lack of government funding is preventing the provision of necessary care reaching a number of key areas. Volunteers can therefore make a real difference by joining staff at a school for the blind, helping to offer the care and support that so many are deprived of.
There are a variety of activities and lessons to get involved with, including teaching English, Maths and sport depending on the age of the children.
Care Work with Deaf Children in Accra, Ghana
Many deaf children in Ghana lack the care they require, largely due to lack of government funding. The few deaf schools that do exist are therefore greatly under staffed and need much more support than is currently available. This care work project gives you the opportunity to help a number overworked local staff and spend dedicated time with deaf children, both in the classroom and during social playtime. As well as teaching English, or helping local staff to teach English, there is a variety of other subject areas to get involved with, including sports and art.
Care Work with Orphans in Accra, Ghana
You will be based at a combined school and orphanage based in the capital, Accra. Being a fluent English speaker will mean you can help in English lessons to give the children a valuable skill and added confidence. You can also use your creativity during your placement as lessons can be unpredictable and the needs of each child are unique. You will face daily challenges but the rewards are great as you develop your own teaching methods for each and every child. Having fun through sport and games is fun for the children, and often for you too!
Care Work with Orphans in Port Elizabeth, South Africa
Due to a lack of government funding, the burden of maintaining care programmes tends to fall on willing volunteers. Therefore, many local care workers and volunteers are overstretched and overworked. However, by joining a project in South Africa, you can make a significant difference to the level of care offered to many young South Africans in orphanages, centres for children with HIV and child drop in centres. Activities include playing sports, helping with teaching and offering companionship to the children. There may also be basic building or redecorating work you can get involved with. Whatever you are doing you will be making a difference and your efforts will be greatly appreciated.
