Company: MondoChallenge
Category: Gap year projects (Teaching, Childcare)

The region of Darjeeling is one of the most beautiful parts of the Himalayan foothills, with a long tradition as a ‘hill station’ much sought after by those living in the heat of the plains! The famous Darjeeling railway is one of the highest operating in the world, and Kalimpong itself is right on the border of Sikkim, famous for it’s beauty and isolation.

Our volunteers are currently working in nine rural primary schools in this area. Five of these are situated in small villages near to Kalimpong with gorgeous mountain views and the other four are closer to Darjeeling with one in the town of Ghoom and another in the Teesta Valley tea plantation.

The essence of our projects is that they are community based, which gives our volunteers the ability to learn from, as well as contribute something to the local people.

Sally Neumerski (Lotus Academy)

"I loved being a small part in providing education and opportunity to children in small community schools where local traditions and culture are valued. Just looking at the children’s faces shows the joy they get from being in school.”
